Whence a name . . .

I’ve always valued my alone time, and I tend to be a night person.  For those who are familiar with tarot, there is another dimension to my choice of name for this blog.  By combining numerology and tarot, it is possible to come up with what is known as a Soul Card and a Personality Card.  Though I’ve heard about it from other tarot people, I first read about this system in Mary K. Greer’s Tarot For Your Self.  To determine your cards, you add together your month, day, and year of birth.  [For those interested in doing this for themselves, I recommend Greer’s book.  Or, I believe Teresa Michelsen has a discussion of this process at her Tarot Moon website: http://www.tarotmoon.com ]  ma-9-hermit.jpg My numbers add up to the Hermit for my Soul Card, and the Moon for my Personality Card.  I’ve heard people argue that such archetypes are too vague to have any real meaning in a person’s life — they say the same thing about astrology.  And while I concede there is a certain amount of truth to that idea, there are some patterns to our lives that last over time — what we usually call our personality.  And if one believes in many lifetimes, you might stretch the idea further to suggest there is an underlying pattern we bring into each life.

According to investigations I’ve done regarding my past lives, the Hermit card does seem to fit me.  There is a certain need for alone time, a tendency to search for “truths” without having them handed to me by another person, and a desire to share what I have learned with other people (usually one-on-one), all while being aware they must follow their own ma-18-moon.jpgpath.  Meanwhile, the Moon seems to fit with my personality in this life.  I’ve always had a fascination with the mysteries of life, with the Moon itself, with dreams and daydreams, with psychic activity, and with the unconscious.  The combination of interests illustrated by these two cards are a part of what has led me to pursue a career in the mental health field.

So, Hermit by Moonlight seemed a good way to express the lens through which I tend to view life.  I hope the things I share here spark your thoughts and imagination, whether you agree with me or not.  🙂

I love the name! I can think of many, many things worse than a Hermit by Moonlight but not a whole lot of things better….in any case, welcome to the blog world! I look forward to the Hermit’s view in or out of the moonlight…

    Hi Judith,

Welcome to the land of Blog! You have made a great beginning. And your Title is inspired!

Your thoughts spark all kinds of ponderings for me, as I’ve been thinking in this same realm for some time now. I’ll have to go back to Mary’s book to check my other cards–other than the Soul card. If I remember correctly, I think they turned out to be all the same number and card. That kind of through me for a loop at the time. But I suppose three sevens would speak volumes to me if I went into this more deeply. I think you have inspired me to do just that!

Your’s soul card does fit you as does the moon in your personality aspect. I don’t know how it all works, but I am one who does believe these windows into our existence do bring us valid information about how and why we came, and what we are here to do. But more than that, there is the suggestion of just how our personal way of being in a lifetime affects our journey and the way we meet the lessons in our path.

Great to see you chose wordpress too. I’m so excited you are here. Here we are together in yet another shared and common community of the Like-Hearted.

    Love,
    Mo
