Listening to my heart

Today is a quiet day for me.  My husband is working, so I slept late.  🙂    We did most of our Christmasy stuff with family and friends on Friday and Saturday.  There will be phone calls today.  But I can pretty much relax and do what I want.  Some of that will include playing WoW.   🙂  But some of it will also be time for listening to my heart.

I finally read The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho.  It was originally published in Portugese back in 1988; I think it was released in English about 1995, but am not certain.  Am not sure why it took me 16 years to discover this gem, but I suspect it was because I was not ready for it.  It is about a Spanish shepherd boy who makes a great journey to follow his Personal Legend.   It is a spiritual book, but not a religious one.  The spirituality is rooted in paying attention to the world around you, paying attention to nature, listening to the Language of the World (Coelho’s capitalisation), listening to your heart.  Coelho is Roman Catholic, but this book could be read by anyone, including atheists, and they could get something out of it.  I love it for a variety of reasons, but the ones important for you to know are 1) it is a short book (only 167 pages in the edition I bought), and 2) it is not written in cloying New Age language or long “spiritual” words.  It is very readable, and even an adventure story of sorts    🙂     Some of my favorite ideas from The Alchemist are:

  • Each person walks their own path
  • True love does not ask you to abandon your Personal Legend
  • Listen to your heart, so you know when it is lying and what it wants
  • The Language of the World is learned through observation and action, not through books

I do wish there had been some discussion of what to do if you stop following your quest, or lose your way, and then seek how to still best make use of this life.  Guess for that I need to start listening to my heart.  🙂

Wishing each of you joy, and determination to follow your heart.   🙂
